Good Lesson Learned

I love my boys.

Backstory: A friend of ours Shawn...he started coming to our church. He works construction and has been helping me from time to time do odd jobs around the house...including some bigger things like insulating the attic. Shawn loves the boys and the boys love Shawn. I mean they just adore Shawn.

Well Shawn fell off a two story roof onto concrete and got really hurt. Several broken vertebrae...but the worst of it is his foot. He broke some weird bones in his foot that even if surgery goes really really well, there's not a great chance that Shawn will be able to work construction again or run or jump.

ANYWAY....So we're driving to school in the morning. We have a strict rule that we don't listen to music or the radio on the way to school...we just talk. So we were talking about Shawn and Corban (my big hearted boy) was asking how badly Shawn was hurt, if he had broken bones, and if he would need surgery. I explained that Shawn was really hurt and that there was a good chance that Shawn wouldn't walk the same again.

Corban asked if Shawn would need a cane. I told him maybe or maybe Shawn would have a limp...we just don't know.

And then he said this: "But we could pray for Shawn and if God wanted to, he could heal him back to normal right? You always tell me that God can do anything. So we should start praying more for Shawn."

I instantly went to tears. My faith sometimes is so lacking. I heard what the doctors said, but my son tells me that I serve a God that can do whatever He wants. So we pulled the van over and we prayed for Shawn right there. Probably not the last lesson I learn from Corban.

This is fun. It's actually two videos in one...you'll see. I'm sure some of you did this stuff in high school physics class....but I didn't. So it's awesome knew knowledge to me.

Two Books

So I get this e-mail update every day from a youth ministry website. There are a couple writers there that discuss different ministry topics. It's sometimes too much for me to think about, but some of their topics are intriguing.

So this week the topic has been two books that have most impacted their ministry. It's been interesting because I love reading....and the books that have impacted their ministries aren't really the ones that have impacted mine.

So they list their top two (that aren't the Bible) and then they list of Runner-Ups.

The problem I have in making my list is that as I get older, and read more the more my list changes. Books that impacted my ministry/life 11 years ago aren't really blowing the doors off to me now. So my list is as follows.

1. Messy Spirituality by Mike Yaconelli
I first read this years ago when Mike was still alive. It rocked my world and how I interacted with students...and so did Mike in his conferences. I actually finished reading it the first time on an airplane...and then promptly forgot to take it with me...so hopefully someone else liked it too. (I have a new copy now)

2. Forgotten God by Francis Chan.
I read this last summer. It wasn't what I thought it was going to be. Francis has an ability to state the obvious in a way that most people don't, or are unwilling to. I used his accompanying video series as our summer study with teens this summer. It was even more fun re-reading it with them and watching it rock their world too.
