Work vs. Procrastination

I'm insanely busy this week. This weekend is our area youth retreat. I have a giant list of stuff I have to do. I don't have time to procrastinate. However there is this part of me that wants to start putting things off.....and this is one of my days to get stuff done without little boys grabbing at me. So in my momentary relax before doing my next project I found this.

Canada

The following post is humor. I sincerely love and respect my in-laws and good friends from the North. You had to know this was coming though.....

Last night the United States Olympic hockey team defeated the Canadian Olympic hockey team. Going into the Olympics everyone said that the gold medal game would be Canada and Russia. There is no way that can happen now. It's more likely that those two will meet much sooner. Canada barely snuck by Switzerland the other day.

The US team wasn't supposed to do much. Some analyst went as far as to say they might not even medal. It's still possible that they won't. However they did a lot for their credibility yesterday. Ryan Miller was awesome.

But honestly how could you not see it coming. The greatest nation on Earth defeated the weaker neighbors to the north......


Canada is like America's attic. You forget they're there most of the time. And then you remember that there's some kind of cool stuff up there.

Random Saturday

So it's been forever since I did a Random Saturday. So I'll RANDOMLY do a Saturday.

-Aliens are coming right? Right? They swipe people all the time right? Right? Just in case you better check this out to make sure you're covered.

-When I was in college my friend Brad had Tetris on his computer. He would stay up until all hours playing it. Since Brad didn't have a roommate (because he always found a way to make them leave) we spent a lot of time in his room. Inevitably we played a bunch of Tetris. I can remember nights of going back to my room to sleep, and falling asleep to Tetris pieces in my head. Now we can take it to a whole new level. (pun not intended but funny anyway)

-There's been a lot of hype lately about the website NERD MERIT BADGES. They're kind of fun and trendy. However. There really are only ten of them. And they're hardly all inclusive. But theboyscoutstore.com has an entire line of Spoof Merit badges that put the nerd badges to shame. There's a long list of merit badges I could earn....but here are some of them....Coffee Drinker Merit Badge, Slacker Merit Badge, Paintball Merit Badge (though I don't like the picture because it's not very realistic to the style of paintball I play.) and Frisbee Merit Badge.
And this blog qualifies me for Blogging Merit Badge.

-A long time ago I shared with you my love for FailBlog. I have kind of shied away from FailBlog as they've kind of gone down hill as far as reputable content goes. However they have a bunch of cool spinnoffs that I like. THERE I FIXED IT is a great one which has a bunch of pictures of peoples home inginuity.....and really unsafe fixes. THAT WILL BUFF OUT is a website of vehicles that are in rough conditions.

-I don't have any tattoos. Some people are amazed by that since I have a bunch of facial hair (and used to have long head hear too). I don't. I probably won't either. I don't like needles. I don't like hurting things. And I'm pretty fickle. So it amazes me more that you would want tattoos on your knuckles. But here's a whole site devoted to Knuckle Tattoos. Some are creative. Some are freaky. I really like this one though!

Last thing. USA vs. Canada Olympic hockey is tomorrow Sunday at 7:40 PM. That means the most anticipated game of the Olympics starts while I'm still at youth group. No problem right...I'll only miss a little bit......except that I have to leave youth group and drive to Jamestown to play my own hockey game. And I can't skip because it's the playoffs!!!! UGH!

CRAYOLA HOLY COW!!!!

Maybe you've already seen this floating around the web. This blew me away in so many ways....(pun intended)

A guy made Crayola(TM) Rockets. Like really big ones. They launched out of a "box" that he created. There were 8 Crayons. Only 4 of them actually ignited.

Yet another amazing Crayola experience. You really should check his site for more pictures including how he created them and even down to choosing the proper paint to match the original box of 8 colors!!!!!

Well he didn't win. That's not much of a shock. He wasn't last though!!!! Robel Teklemariam the cross country skier from Ethiopia finished 93rd out of 96 competitors. He was 12 minutes back. Not what he wanted, but I was still stoked to see people waving Ethiopian flags and wearing jackets and hats with the Ethiopian colors on it! Way to go Robel!!!!!!!

Coffee and Yamakas

So when Corban was little he would help me make coffee every morning. He thought it was fun. He doesn't anymore. While we were making coffee he would always ask me to put the filter on his head like a hat. I would oblige, but it always fell off quickly. He would want me to try. I would oblige and it would quickly fall off.

The other morning, Tobiah was hanging around while I was making coffee. For whatever reason I decided to put the filter on his head.

To be fair, Tobiah has a oddly shaped head. It's much nicer looking now than when he first came home. So the filter sits perfectly on the back of his head. Like he can shake his head around and it won't move. It's ON THERE! So he walks around the house with a coffee filter on his head. So I'm not sure if it's his way of being OK with me drinking coffee or his attempt to be Jewish....which would bring something new into the house.

We have a Canadian, two Ethiopians, and an American. We are members of one denomination but attend a church that belongs to two other denominations. Corban goes to the Catholic pre-school. So.....a little Jewish faith would just add to our diversity I think.

My Olympic Hopes

As I've told you before we don't have TV. So I'm not really able to watch much of the Olympics. Apparently the Olympic committee is cracking down hard on online feeds....so I'm even more limited.

This makes me sad. I found out that Ethiopia actually has a winter Olympic team. Well....actually it's just one guy. But I"m STOKED for him. He also has a blog that you can follow him. HIS BLOG IS HERE. He also has some great YouTube videos.

He's not expected to medal. He's not expected to be close. But it's so much fun to be rooting for someone other than the US mens hockey team (who I predict will not medal). Take a minute to read through his blog a bit and watch some of his YouTube videos. So AWESOME.

Timkat

I should've blogged this awhile ago. A very cool night.

For the past couple years, we have celebrated the Ethiopian holiday Timkat. Because of where we have lived we've only ever been able to have a couple friends over and just make one or two dishes of food. Basically Timkat is the celebration of Jesus being baptized. It's a big deal in Ethiopia.

This year we decided that since we finally have room, we were going to go big. We decided that in every way we were going to expand our celebration this year. Before we had only made Ethiopian food. This year we were going to make a little bit of everything. We made a TON of Injera Bread (which is used in every Ethiopian dish to eat it), we made two different Ethiopian main courses: Doro Wat and a Vegetable Alecha Wat. We also made Dabo Kolo, which is an Ethiopian fried dough snack. We made some Thai Chicken Satay. Also a TON of Chinese egg rolls (these are great because I literally could fill myself with just these). We also had some Dutch treats called Oliebollen. Marjorie grew up with these on New Years Day. We also had some Ethiopian coffee, a variety of teas and juices and some carbonated beverages. (Now that I've typed all that, I'm really hungry)

We invited a bundle of people. The folks that were able to come, ranged from families with little kids, to adults, friends form church, friends from work. Friends we've had for years, and friends we're still getting to know. We made enough food for plenty more people to show up. It was great.

What we didn't tell anyone was that we were also going to celebrate Tobiah's birthday. Mari made an Elmo ice cream cake. I like ice cream cake.

In the end we really wanted to expose a group of people to some different things. We hope we did that. We know that a couple people left our house and went home to do some research on Ethiopia. Mission accomplished.
